The Fight In The Dog

It was probably no coincidence there were a couple ‘receiver v. defender’ drills run during the Toronto Argonauts practice Thursday at the team’s Downsview Park facility.

Following the release of four receivers – Tori Gurley, Kevin Elliott, Vidal Hazelton, and Phil Bates – from the squad on the Monday after a 38-11 loss to the Montreal Alouettes, head coach Scott Milanovich and his coaching staff probably wanted to see who among the current roster of pass catchers had the fight in them to step up and fill in.

It will be a tough go for the whole team this coming Monday, though, as the Argos host the red hot Calgary Stampeders – winners of 11-straight – who sit comfortably in top spot in the CFL Western Division standings.

It could be a good chance for second-year receiver / punt returner Diontae Spencer, below, to break out and lead the receivers against a tough Stampeders team.

The pressure will also be on quarterback Drew Willy, below, who will have to find those receivers and complete passes.

Whatever happens this Holiday Monday at BMO Field, it will certainly be ‘hair-raising’.
