Toronto Star Photog Steve Russell

This is Toronto Star photographer Steve Russell as I captured him shooting the 2014 Queen’s Plate at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Steven is one of the top shooters in not only the Toronto but North American news and sports field.

His series of stunning images from the recent Pan-Am Games is a testament to his skill and imagination: turning a few flash units and a bucket of water into fabulous art.

Just last night, Steven captured Ben Revere’s amazing catch against the left field fence in Game 6 of the ALCS, a game in which the Toronto Blue Jays were eliminated from the 2015 playoffs.

He began his career at The Toronto Star in 1998 and in 2006 he won The National Newspaper Award for Sports Photography, adding a National Newspaper Award in Spot News Photography in 2009. He was Canadian Association of Journalists photojournalist of the year in 2008 and 2011 and the News Photographer’s Association of Canada’s Photojournalist of the year in 2011. He is a four-time Eastern Canadian News Photographer’s Association Photographer of the Year and a four-time National Press Photographer’s Association’s Region Two Photographer of the Year.
