Bringing Their A’s Game

The Brampton A’s climbed a little closer to .500 basketball on the season with a 102-92 win against the visiting Halifax Rainmen at the Powerade Centre Friday night.
And even though it looks like Rainmen strong forward and team captain Tyrone Watson just wanted to lie down and close his eyes to the events that transpired on the court, below, the Halifax squad showed some resilience and muscled back on a number of occasions throughout the night, even managing to take a small lead in the second half of the game.
“They’re a talented team,” said Brampton head coach and general manager David Magley. “There’s a lot of juice there.”
But Brampton’s strength in the fourth quarter and their ball movement added up to a late surge and a strong 10-point victory to bring the A’s record to 9 wins and 10 losses so far this National Basketball League of Canada season.
TyShwan Edmondson, below, led all A’s scorers with 19 on the night.
Defensively, Freddy Apiah, below, added tenacious ball coverage on Rainmen players coming up the court and contributed to a number of defensive steals during the game.
Even though getting a win is important, coach Magley is intent on creating a way everyone on the A’s squad can contribute.
“We’re trying to get to a style of play that’s got a lot of more passing and I thought we moved the ball better (tonight) than we have all year,” he said.
“It’s funny: we didn’t hit our first three until Tom Granado hit one and then we hit about five or six in a row, and that’s what we’re trying to do. If we can play that style of basketball, then we can compete with anybody.”
Granado, below, Brampton’s 6’10” centre originally from Irivne, California, is known more for his muscle under the basket than his long range jumpers.
Kevin Young, below going up for a rebound, and his Halifax team complete their two-night Ontario trip with a game tonight against the London Lightning.
Brampton hits the home court again this Tuesday when they play the Windsor Express. Tickets to this special night of basketball are only two dollars!!
