A Hurricane Lost

The start of a playing season for a football team is supposed to be one of excitement and anticipation. But for the Hamilton Hurricanes of the Ontario Football Conference, the passing of one of their key players just eight days before their opening game surely made their first contest an emotional as well as a physical effort.

Twenty-one year-old Zack Duguay, a 6’5″ offensive lineman for the two-time defending OFC champs, died August 8 at his home due to complications of an epileptic seizure. The following link will certainly give insight into what kind of young man he was and how much he loved to play football.

Zack’s father, Brian, pictured below with some of the memorial t-shirts worn during the Hurricanes’ season opener August 11 against Burlington, is head coach of the Niagara Spears junior varsity club in the Ontario Varsity Football League. Zack also coached on that team and was headed to McMaster University this fall to attend school and possibly play for the defending CIS football champions, the McMaster Marauders.

The family would appreciate donations in Zack’s memory to the Niagara Spears Football Club or the Hamilton Hurricanes Football Club.

The game itself was a high scoring affair with Burlington quarterback Mack Blewett leading his squad to a 45-38 win.

The Burlington team took an early lead and despite great efforts throughout the game to close the scoring gap, the ‘Canes could not match the Braves’ output.
